The Strategist - Summer 2000

Security Marketing Assessment

The most logical place to start a marketing effort-is at the beginning. And the beginning usually means a strategic marketing assessment.

The Problem

When I asked Dale Harberts, President of First Security Bank of Byron and Tim Lawler and Jeff Wallevand, both Vice Presidents, how they wanted to improve their marketing program, they answered "We know we need to be marketing better, but we don't know where to begin." From that answer, I knew we needed to start with a strategic marketing assessment.

The Assessment

I met on-site with the marketing staff for a full day. During that time, I met with staff members responsible for the marketing effort both one-on-one and as a group. We identified all the current marketing problems- externally & internally. Then, through a process I use, we prioritized each of the problems.

From that step, I then returned to my office & authored a detailed assessment that identified the highest priority problems and action steps to fix them.

The Benefits

As a result of our work together, First
Security has:

  • Tightened their marketing focus
  • Identified new marketing vehicles and
  • Established a written marketing
    plan.
